Enter the tranquillity of Lake Toba, a work of art created during a long-ago catastrophe. At over 1,145 sq km, and a depth of up to 450 meters in places, Lake Toba is actually more like an ocean. It is the worlds largest crater lake as well as being the largest lake in South East Asia and one of the deepest lakes in the world. This oasis, known as "Danau Toba" in Indonesian, offers a welcome respite from the everyday. Discover the depths of Batak culture while feeling the soft touch of colder air.
More than 3 million members of 6 distinct Batak tribes make their home in the surrounding country. Each group has it's own dialect, customs and architectural style.
The Batak legacy is evident on Samosir Island, which is linked to Sumatra via a land bridge. It represents the Batak people's culture and customs and serves as a spiritual haven for them, asking you to explore it and find its undiscovered gems.
At Ambarita, be sure to see the mysterious Stone Chairs, which were once thought to represent a tribal court. These ancient artefacts and traditional Batak homes are windows into a bygone past that are eager to tell their tales.
Take a 30-minute ride across quiet water to Tomok. This is home to the carved boat-like tomb of King Sidabutar. In an enclosure opposite the tomb are ritual statues of a buffalo sacrifice. At the end of an avenue of souvenir booths leading from the jetty are dozens of stands selling kain ulos (hand-woven fabric), two-stringed mandolins, ornate woodcarvings, Batak calendars and many other items of cultural interest.
For those wishing to delve deeper into the Batak culture, a visit to the Simanindo museum is a must, as you can see the amazing Batak style houses with their roof shaped like the buffalo horns, and you will also be treated to a performance of the wonderful Batak traditional dancing
